A Fish Called Wanda
1988 comedy
Rating: 16/20
Plot: Double-and-triple-crosses abound as four thieves steal some diamonds and then try to steal them again. Shenanigans!
Love this sharply-edged, darkly-shaded screwballery with virtuoso performances by Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis, both who show this ability to shift in a blink. And Curtis treats us to an obligatory high-waisted underwear shot, and that's always a sight to behold. This is just so buoyant, a movie with these characters who you don't really identify with because life just wasn't this ridiculous, even in 1988. The story sort of flakes away after a while. It's there only as an excuse to get this ensemble together and let them bounce off each other and occasionally rub up against each other. Cleese is also great, and it's loads of fun watching Palin stutter his way through his scenes.
