Microbe and Gasoline

2015 quirky coming-of-age story

Rating: 14/20

Plot: A loner befriends another loner, and after they build their own whimsical car, they travel across the country together.

It's quirky, but it's not as imaginative as Michel Gondry's other films. The car is a funky little thing, and I loved shots of it traveling along French roads. I also liked the performances of Ange Dargent and Theophile Baquet at the heart of this. This story of friendship feels very personal although I'm sure Gondry never built a car out of junk and traveled across France with a buddy. Or maybe he did. How the hell am I supposed to know?
