The Secret Life of Pets

2016 animated blandness

Rating: 10/20 (Jen: 14/20; Abbey: 11/20; Buster: 20/20)

Plot: A lot like Toy Story, but with pets.

I know this is completely unfair, but it just doesn't seem like the makers of this tried very hard. Unless they were trying to be really loud. That's something that separates an animated movie that is only for children and one that adults can also appreciate. Good animated movies know when to quiet down. And they know how to quiet down. This movie is like a hyperactive toddler who doesn't shut up.

The humor all feels obvious, the characters aren't likable or memorable, the voice work is uninspired, and the story is derivative. The movie is colorful, and I enjoyed seeing so much of an animated New York City, but this movie was upsetting to at least three of my senses.

At least there weren't any farting dogs.

It's awful when you know without a doubt that you are going to hate a movie within five minutes of the film and then have to sit and suffer through it for about 90 minutes more. At least Buster liked it.
