King of Hearts
1966 dark comedy
Rating: 16/20
Plot: At the end of World War I, a guy used to working with messenger pigeons is sent to a town to diffuse a bomb planted by the Germans. The only people remaining in the town are people from the local asylum who crown the visitor their king.
Add this to the list of great anti-war satires along with Dr. Strangelove and the others that you already added to the list. There's a surreal quality to this one as the lunatics (is that a nice word?) take over various jobs in the city, and I'm glad there was a circus in town, probably very unlikely in the middle of a war zone, so that scenes with a random camel or a monkey playing chess could be in there.
