Red Sorghum
1987 love story
Rating: 17/20
Plot: A woman marries a leper, almost immediately becomes a widow, and takes control of a wine distillery. She develops a complicated relationship with one of the men who carried her sedan and helped save her from bandits.
This yadda-yadda-yaddas over so many details, but it gives us the shot of a guy peeing in wine jugs because he's mad at the world, so I can't really complain. It's a beautiful story, one drenched in reds, and it's also a completely unpredictable story. I don't feel like I knew where this one was headed at any point. It flows like a dark folk tale, one soaked in urine and wine and tickled by sorghum stalks.
This was Zhang Yimou's first film, and it sure is a good one.
OK, I have to go to bed now. Good night.
