1954 giant thing movie
Rating: 18/20 (adjusted--1 bonus point for each Wilhelm Scream)
Plot: Strange things are afoot somewhere in New Mexico. Turns out, gigantic ants, the product of nuclear testing, are causing problems. An old man, his daughter, an FBI guy, and some state policemen have to figure out a way to stop the spread of these giant insects before they destroy humanity.
The most shocking thing about this horror movie? Definitely that it isn't all that bad. From the appearance of the title (in striking red with the exclamation mark--always a bonus) to the well-done climax in Los Angeles sewers, this is really a pretty good film. There are moments of typical B-movie acting and dialogue. A couple drunkards really overdo things, and the now-late Fess Parker is amazingly awful as Mr. Crotty. I do worry that watching this movie last night played some part in the death of Fess Parker, but that doesn't make much sense. I really like some lines in this, ones that seemingly defy logic: "The blood must be 10-12 hours old." "Everything seems to indicate a homicidal maniac." The old man's order of "Get the antenny!" The old man's talk about a Biblical prophesy come true. The guy who kept shouting "Make me the sergeant in charge of the booze," something that I'm sure a fan of this movie has shouted uncontrollably during a period of inebriation. Other flaws in logic? Sure. Why is there only one ant footprint? What's 9 years have to do with anything? Why's there a ribcage? Where did these small town coppers get a couple bazookas? Are there really 700 miles of Los Angeles sewers? But you know what? None of that really matters. This movie has one dull filmstrip too many, and at times, I really wished they'd stop all the talking and get to more scenes with giant ants ("Shoot the antenny!"), but there's a lot of good here. I really like the use of props--pieces of cloth, bones, twisted guns, discombobulated baby dolls. And I really think they do a great job creating atmosphere with desert winds and wildly swinging hanging lights. I also liked the little girl, especially in the scenes where she's stunned into silence. One more note: This movie has not just one and not just two but three Wilhelm screams. My well-trained ears heard them all, probably because my ears don't have all that much to do. Jen doubted me, so I made her look it up, and sure enough, there are three Wilhelms in Them! I don't care what you say. That is just freakin' awesome.
What I learned from watching Them!: ants are kind of mean.
This was another Cory recommendation.

There are of course very well established scientific explanations for all of your questions (e.g. the ribcage is what is left of a missing film critic). Er, I just don't have time right now to elaborate. Also, Fess Parker is never bad and you can never have too many newsreel scenes.
I have always loved this movie. I love it's tone and the fact that you can sort of buy it and show it to others without embarrassment(?)... not much anyway, even though it is about giant mutant ants. The score is also terrific. I think this is objectively the greatest movie of it's kind. A subjective 20 from me. Thanks for giving it a shot and I'm glad I could laugh again at an "ants are mean" line.
Your replacement horror film, if you can find it. it "The Day the Earth Caught Fire".
Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed the scene with Fess Parker. But I think he'll likely be nominated for my Torgo Award, which, if he wins, he'll now have to receive posthumously.
I guess I agree about showing this to other people without embarrassment. You show 'Night of the Lepurs' or 'Attack of the Killer Leeches' to the wrong crowd, and they'll think you're insane. Show this one to the wrong crowd and, although they might not like it, you'll at least still be able to remain a member of society. Greatest movie of its kind? It is surprisingly well done. I'd like to see 'The Giant Claw' from 1957 before I make a decision on "Best Big Thing" movie.

Library doesn't have 'The Day the Earth Caught Fire'...I imagine it's Netflixable. I am waiting for a strategic time (read: when I'm not coaching softball and doing a variety of other things) to do a one-month Netflix trial to watch 'The Fifth Horseman Is Fear'...I'll check it then.
Netflix does not have it. How about a foreign flick instead. I think you'll have a much easier time getting "Army of Shadows".
I will have to finish "Eraserhead" today. I was not a lucky man with last night's long movie.
'Army of Shadows' it is...
I'll try to illegally download the other one some time. Is it worth being arrested for?
Them! is the greatest giant monster movie ever. Yes even over Godzilla or King Kong. (Both of which I love.)
1950's Sci Fi is an incredible gold mine of great movies.
Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, It Came From Outer Space, The Monolith Monsters, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Thing From Another World...and so many others. You could do a full month on 50's sci fi and find several hidden gems.
Oh did I mention I love Them! ?
A 20 for me.
Never heard of "The Monolith Monsters". It's worth checking out? You're absolutely right about 50's Sci-Fi and "Them", Barry.
The Monolith Monsters is my very favorite hidden gem 50's sci fi movie. Its not great....but its damn entertaining.
Its about rocks that threaten to destroy the world, (Or at least some small desert southwestern town) Yes rocks...not rock monsters, or monsters covered in rocks....just rocks...great big giant rocks that grow.
If you go to IMDB and check out the movie, then you look at the reviews of that movie, you will see I was the second person ever to post a review of that film...now there are like 40 or 50 reviews, but I tell you..I DISCOVERED THE DAMN MOVIE FIRST.
The "Unique Giant Monster Movie" will be seen next week (and I get "The Incredible Shrinking Man" as a bonus!).
I put 'Monolith' on hold. I'll be able to pick it up at my library by the end of the week. On VHS!
VHS will make it even better!
I do want to point out that Monolith Monsters is NOT a great movie. If you were going to go after fifties sci fi with serious quality, rent yourself The Thing From Another World, which I still like better than the fun, but bloody, remake in the 80's starring Kurt Russell. Of course there is always Forbidden Planet or War of the Worlds....which are totally kick ass.
What fifties SciFi had that a lot of modern stuff is lacking, is lead characters that are smart, and act in a smart way. Almost always the hero is a scientist or intellectual of some kind. It certainly makes more sense than having Randy Quaid and Will Smith save the world with blundering.
Wait a minute, Barry...you were the FIRST to discover the movie? What about Oscar? It looks like he beat you by almost a year!
I understand your feelings about this one, that it is more fun than it is great. I don't expect this to be a classic, like 'Eraserhead'...I think I'll enjoy it though. I've seen the other movies on your 50s list.
More importantly, 'Joe vs. the Volcano' is a 10?
"greatest giant monster movie ever"
Son Of Godzilla
I have broke through hating it to loving it.
Cory is a Godzilla aficionado. I don't believe he's ever mentioned 'Son of Godzilla' though.
Are you just teasing, Kairow?
Barry probably knows as much about these as I do, and I'm guessing he would feel the same way I do about that last comment. "Son of Godzilla" is one of two Godzilla films I have not seen. The reason I haven't seen it is because I have seen "Godzilla's Revenge", an incredibly annoying crapfest that also stars the super-annoying Minya and his smoke rings. Anything with that fake sounding and looking creature (I realize the irony of what I just wrote) automatically starts with a 3 point handicap. Have you seen that one, Kairow? I could be wrong, but I believe it incorporates scenes from "son of Godzilla" and adds an insipid kid's story. Regardless, I have a very hard time believing "Son of Godzilla" could make the following all-time giant monster list.
1. Them!
2. Monster Zero (my personal favorite)
3. Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster
4. Rodan
5. King Kong (1933)
6. The Blob
7. Godzilla (1954)
8. Godzilla vs Destroyer
9. Destroy All Monsters
10. Cloverfield
Any film you hate at first probably does not compare with the classics above.
You might check out Shane's "Gojiro" review for further thoughts.
I love Joe vs. the Volcano. Its one of those movies that speaks to me. But thats another review all together.
Here are the original Godzilla movies.....in order of how I like them, best to worst.
Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero (1965)
Godzilla (1954)
Destroy All Monsters (1968)
Godzilla Vs. Mothra (1964)
Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
King Kong Vs. Godzilla (1962)
Son of Godzilla (1967) (Has some great fight scenes…seriously. Its good)
Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
Godzilla Vs. the Sea Monster (1966)
Godzilla Vs. Hedorah (1971) (The Smog Monster)
Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
Godzilla Vs. Megalon (1973)
Godzilla Vs. Gigan (1972) (Godzilla and Ghidrah talk…yes talk. Its dreadful)
Godzilla's Revenge (1969) (Cory knows how bad this is)
They started over again with Godzilla 1985...all these movies, (And there are a lot of them) are darker and less fun. There is one, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah that is as anti American propaganda as I have ever seen.
Oh and Oscar is a goddamn POSER.....he doesnt love Monolith Monsters like I love Monolith Monsters.
First off, I can't believe I didn't rate 'Them!' higher now that I think about it. THREE WILHELM SCREAMS! Come on!
I didn't think you liked 'Cloverfield,' Cory...am I thinking of somebody else?
Barry--I figured it was something like that with Oscar. I've never trusted people named Oscar, one of those people being a grandfather.
Wasn't 'Smog Monster' in one of those worst movie ever books, Cory?
I might have commented on Cloverfield...I thought it was kind of mediocre, and the characters in it incredibly stupid.
I just could not stay in the movie enough.
Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster was a bad movie...but there are several of the old Godzilla movies that are worse. Godzillas Revenge is just unwatchable....even from a hard core G fan like me.
I dont know if Cory has ever seen Godzilla vs. Gigan, (Its also called Godzilla on Monster Island) but if you love really REALLY bad movies that are not dull...just BAD, then thats the one for you.
Does that mean "Them!" will see an improvement on the 15 you gave?
"Cloverfield" is a very good movie. Stylistically, I thought it was terrific. It had great tension, pace, and what's better than seeing stupid people get killed? The intimate style added real terror to the giant monster formula. A 16.
"...Smog..."is in a "Golden Turkey" book, and with good reason... it is awful. I liked and was impressed with your list, Barry, except that "Ghidrah..." is better than "Mothra" and "...Smog..." should be at the bottom of any list it is a part of. Comparing it to "Godzilla's Revenge" is like comparing vomit to shit, but the vomit thankfully is much rarer. Hedorah oozes crap, belches stuff out, and flings acidic goo onto our hero (I think I recall Godzilla even getting an eye fried by the stuff). Come to think of it, this may have been a strong influence on "Eraserhead". Remember how Godzilla is able to fly? (I'm not kidding). Remember the hippies? Remember the song, the hippie song, "Save the Earth"?
Animals, God's animals
Don't go away, don't go
Flowers, my flowers
Don't go away, don't go
The sea has cobalt, it's full of mercury
...
Save the Earth
Save the Earth
Even the director of all of the previous Godzilla's (who was out sick) said the director of this mess ruined the franchise and would never work at Toho again.
Like Disney, Godzilla would not recover it's feet for 20 years.
"...Smog..." is a truly nauseating mixture of eco-preaching, grossness, lame humor, animation, and hippies. To say that I prefer "Godzilla's Revenge" says all you need to know. A 3.
Meant producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, not director.
