Bad Movie Club: Pieces

1982 slasher movie

Bad Movie Rating: 4/5 (Josh: 3/5; Lisa: 3/5)

Rating: 5/20

Plot: A killer with a chainsaw or two threatens a college campus in his efforts to collect enough pieces to make his own woman.

Within the first four minutes, Pieces treats you to a scene where a little boy puts an ax in his mother's head because she tried to get rid of his puzzle of a nude woman. From there, the movie provides a lot of wheezing, mild-to-moderate gore, a great scene with Lynda Day George screaming "Bastards!" a few times, and artificially twisty plot developments. The way director Juan Piquer Simon and writers Dick Randall and Roberto Loyola set up their audience, it's a no-win situation for them. I think I would have been annoyed if the character they want us to think is wielding that chainsaw was piecing together his own Frankenstein woman to make up for the loss of his puzzle, and I know I was annoyed with how the whole thing turned out. Lopped-off heads, lopped-off legs, lopped-off pinkie toes. Those might not have been as gruesome as the acting, but if you like crazy serial killer pictures grisly, you might get something out of this.

My favorite moment is likely the appearance of a random guy showing off his karate and chop-suey word play.

We had a bit of an argument about the final shot of the movie, one that might involve castration. Wikipedia, I'm happy to report, proved me right.

Warning: This movie has a shot of a penis as well as a reference to the impressive size of the member, presumably because the actor did some uncredited work on the screenplay.
